Malibu Stories is a documentary series featuring characters from the creative community that call Malibu their home.
Episode 1 - John Clarity
The story of John Clarity and why he has spent the last 5 years as creator and custodian of this amazing transformative and living artwork by Trancas Canyon on Zuma Beach and his connection to the Malibu community and how he was drawn to this special place.
Episode 2 - Leigh McCloskey
This episode of Malibu Stories follows Leigh McCloskey a local artist, actor and visionary who has spent the past 15 years creating a spectacular three dimensional artwork at his home and studio depicting the hieroglyph of the human soul.
Episode 3 - Dave Bassett
Dave Bassett is a musician, songwriter and record producer. He is known for writing songs for artists such as Elle King, Fitz and the Tantrums, Shinedown, Pop Evil, Josh Groban, Idina Menzel, Daughtry, Saliva, Halestorm, Sevendust, 10 Years, Skillet, and most notably, for co-writing the 2015 song Fight Song for Rachel Platten. He has also written songs for soundtracks and TV shows.
Episode 4 - Skyler Caputo
Pepperdine University, Beach volleyball student Skylar Caputo and her love for Malibu and the 'home court' advantage of Zuma beach. Zuma, where she plays barefoot in the sand, side by side with the ocean and the 'heart of the wind.' Skylar balances her beach volleyball competitiveness with the spiritual solitude of Surf convocation and paddle boarding in the arms of Malibu's coastal water.
Episode 5 - Khalil Rafati
Khalil Rafati went to Los Angeles in the 1990s and had it all. He was working with Hollywood movie stars and legendary rock musicians, but it wasn't long before he found his way into the dark underbelly of the City of Angels.
When he hit rock bottom addicted to heroin and cocaine, overtaken by paranoia and psychosis, written off by his friends and family he grabbed a shovel and kept digging. At 33, Khalil was 109 pounds, a convicted felon, high school dropout, and homeless junkie living on the infamous Skid Row in downtown L.A.
Malibu Stories - Episode 5 tells the story of how Malibu and the people who live here literally saved Khalil's life.
Episode 6 - David Ashwell
David Ashwell trained as a Graphic Designer at Kingston College of Art in his native Britain.
In 1971, after five years as an advertising art director he became a director of TV commercials, making more than 800 commercials in over 30 countries. He has won awards in every major advertising competition in both Europe and the US.
At age 50, in 1993, he completed his first painting and by 2001 he gave up directing to become a full time painter, mostly of Malibu landscapes. His work has been sold in France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, England, Canada and the United States.
He has had 6 solo shows at Skidmore Contemporary Art, located at Bergamot Station in Santa Monica, CA.
David is a long time Malibu resident and well respected member of the community.
Episode 7 - Mati Waiya
Mati Waiya, is a revered Chumash ceremonial elder upholding both traditional ancestral heritage and customs whilst managing the immense task of articulating very current and relevant concerns for the environment.
Episode 7 reveals the depth and complexity of this Malibu (Humaliwu) local as he shares his understanding of the past and challenges us to realize how important our concerns for our environment are in this present moment to secure our future.
Episode 8 - Mitch Taylor
Mitch Taylor is a long time surfer of Malibu's breaks, a well known and respected local who has a particular passion for Zuma Beach.
Long form feature with all the stories woven together - all with one thing in common - a deep love and respect for Malibu.
